Weight Loss Surgery is designed for those individuals whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is greater than or equal to 40, or greater than or equal to 35 with serious obesity-related co-morbid conditions.
BMI definitions:
20 or less = very low body fat, usually seen in athletes or those with serious illnesses
20-25 = acceptable normal range
26-29 = overweight
30-34 = obese, increased risk of co-morbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, and some cancers
35-39 = severely obese, significantly increased risk for serious health problems
40 and above = morbid obesity, significantly increased risk of serious and possible life-threatening health problems. Decreased life expectancy.
